(9 Jan 2018) French prosecutors have opened an investigation into Apple over revelations it secretly slowed down older versions of its handsets. The Paris prosecutor's office said on Tuesday that a preliminary probe was opened last week over alleged "deception and planned obsolescence" of some Apple products. It's led by the French body in charge of fraud control which is part of the finance ministry. It follows a legal complaint filed in December by a French consumer rights group that aims to stop intentional obsolescence of goods by companies. In France it is illegal to intentionally shorten the lifespan of a product in order to encourage customers replace it. A 2015 law makes it a crime, with penalties of up to two years in prison and fines of up to five percent of the company's annual turnover. Apple apologized in December for secretly slowing down older iPhones, a move it said was necessary to avoid unexpected shutdowns related to battery fatigue. The company said on its website "we have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades." Lawsuits against the company have been filed in the US and Israel. The French consumer rights group, called HOP, filed a lawsuit on December 27. It claims Apple slowed down older smartphones in order to make clients buy the new iPhone 8, which was launched on the market around the same time, according to HOP's written statement. Benchmark tests have suggested the slowdown isn't huge, but noticeable. Although Apple has said that's done to prevent iPhones from unexpectedly shutting down because of weak batteries, lawsuits filed against Apple say that its failure to disclose that right away could have led some people to wrongly conclude they needed a newer, faster phone rather than just a new battery. A similar investigation targeting Japanese company Epson was opened late last year, also following a complaint by consumer rights group HOP. The Epson probe, that was launched by another prosecutor's office, in Nanterre, outside Paris, is related to some of its printers and ink cartridges, HOP has said. It was the first legal action ever against planned obsolescence in France, HOP said in a statement. PARIS, FRANCE — Friday night's deadly terror attacks in Paris, in which around 130 people were killed, took place at six locations and were carried out by three teams of terrorists working in unison, according to French prosecutors. The first explosion took place at 9.20 p.m. outside Gate D of the Stade De France Stadium during a France vs. Germany friendly football match. Reports said an attacker holding a ticket to the game was frisked as he tried to enter the stadium. His suicide vest was detonated as he backed away from security guards. Ten minutes later, a second suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest near Gate H of the stadium. While a third suicide bomber exploded his device near a McDonald's restaurant close to the stadium at around 9.53 p.m. The three suicide bombers and one passer by were killed in the attacks. Meanwhile, across town in Paris' 10th district, gunmen pulled up at the Le Carillon restaurant in a black car at approximately 9:25 p.m. and began shooting at customers. The attackers also targeted patrons at the Le Petit Cambodge restaurant across the street, the two attacks killed 15 people in total. Seven minutes later five people were killed when gunmen arriving in a black car shot at customers outside the bar La Bonne Biere. Then, at 9:36 p.m. gunmen, again travelling in a black vehicle, opened fire at customers eating outside the La Belle Equipe restaurant, killing 19. Several minutes later, at 9.40 p.m. a fourth suicide bomber detonated his device at the Comptore Voltaire restaurant, killing himself and seriously injuring one other person. At around the same time, three gunmen arrived at the Bataclan concert venue in a black VW Polo. After opening fire on concertgoers inside, witnesses said the men gathered hostages near the stage and made a brief address about Iraq and Syria. At 11:20 p.m., French special forces storm the building, killing one of the three terrorists. The other two detonate suicide vests. 89 people died at the scene. An international manhunt is now underway for French citizen Salah Abdeslam, who is suspected of being involved in the attacks. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A terrorist who killed more than 80 people in Nice on Bastille Day had several accomplices and planned the atrocity for months, according to French prosecutors. A married Albanian couple, two French-Tunisian men, and a Tunisian man are accused by anti-terrorism judges of aiding attacker Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, the Telegraph reported. French-Tunisian Bouhlel killed 84 people and injured more than 300 when he drove a truck and fired a pistol into crowds on July 14. He was later shot dead by police. A search of Bouhlel’s computer and cell phone revealed photos of the Bastille Day fireworks in Nice last year. Prosecutors believe Boulel planned the attack for up to a year. Bouhlel searched for information about the amphetamine-like drug Captagon, reportedly used by jihadists to reduce fear and tiredness. A Facebook message sent on April 4 by suspect Choukri C. told Bouhlel: “Fill up the truck with 2,000 tons of iron and screw [them], cut the brakes and my friend I'll watch”, the Telegraph reported. Prosecutors allege the Albanian couple supplied the pistol to suspect Ramzi A, who then gave it to Bouhlel. French police found seven ounces of cocaine and 2,500 euros in cash at the home of Ramzi A. A police search at the home of one of Ramzi A’s associates found an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition. Surveillance footage shows Tunisian national Choukri C. with Bouhlel in the truck before the attack, according to prosecutors. Photos of the two and of suspect Mohamed Walid G. inside the truck were also found on Bouhlel’s phone. Although ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, prosecutors said they have found no direct link between Bouhlel and the terrorist group. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. French prosecutors have announced a preliminary investigation into whether manslaughter charges should be brought over the Germanwings plane crash. It is not clear exactly who any possible charges would target. All 150 people on board, mostly from Spain and Germany, died in the crash in March. Marseilles prosecutor Brice Robin said there was "no doubt" that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed the Airbus A320 in the French Alps. Both Germanwings and Lufthansa have previously said that Lubitz, 27, had passed all fitness to fly tests. Lufthansa has also acknowledged that it knew the co-pilot had suffered from severe depression in 2009 while training for his pilot's licence. Mr Robin said some doctors treating Lubitz felt he was unfit to fly but did not tell his employers because of German laws on patient confidentiality. He said a preliminary investigation by three magistrates would focus on whether the gap between what the pilot's doctors knew, and what his employers knew, points to manslaughter charges. Mr Robin said that Lubitz had seen seven separate doctors in the month before the crash - one GP, three psychologists and three eye specialists. Lubitz was troubled about problems with his eyesight and just over a week before the crash, he told one doctor he was only sleeping two hours a night and feared he was going blind. But doctors could find no "organic cause" for his failing sight, with one doctor suggesting that it might have been due to psychosis. Mr Robin was speaking after meeting some of the relatives of those who died in the crash. On Wednesday the coffins of 16 German schoolchildren and two teachers killed in the crash arrived in the town of Haltern. Residents holding white roses lined the route as a convoy of white hearses passed the children's school. The victims' remains were the first to be repatriated following delays over errors on the death certificates. The remains of the rest of the victims will be repatriated over the coming weeks. The passengers were from 18 countries, including Australia, Argentina and Japan, but most of those on board were either Spanish or German.

Prosecutors in Paris have launched a full-scale investigation into the sudden disappearance of a North Korean student linked to the political rivals of the regime′s leader Kim Jong-un. News agency AFP reports a case was opened due to fears the student could be executed, if he were forcibly repatriated to Pyongyang. French authorities are still attempting to work out if he escaped the clutches of suspected North Korean agents and is still in France. The student, identified only by his family name, Han, has not been seen for over two weeks. He′s the son of a close aide to Jang Song-thaek, Kim Jong-un′s uncle, who was purged and swiftly executed late last year on charges of treason. Han′s father was also executed recently, as part of the regime′s continued liquidation of Jang′s inner circle.
